Sign Makers and Van Signwriting for Paignton

Signs, window graphics and van lettering for Paignton businesses, designed and produced by an experienced sign maker based nearby in Newton Abbot.

Sign Art has been making signs and signwriting vehicles since 1979. If you run a business in Paignton and need a shop sign, window lettering, magnetic vehicle signs or van graphics, you can deal directly with the person designing and producing the work.

The workshop is at Milber in Newton Abbot, within easy reach of Paignton and Torbay. Vehicle graphics are fitted at the workshop, where there is time to position everything properly and check the finished work before the vehicle leaves.

Signs already produced for Paignton

Sign Art has supplied signage and graphics for Paignton and Torbay businesses, including work for Big Ant Group and Pirates Bay Crazy Golf.

“Cannot thank Leigh enough for all his work for the Big Ant Group, amazing service and delivered everything on time and to budget. Would recommend Sign Art highly.”

JR, Big Ant Group, Paignton, September 2019

Real local work is more useful than simply claiming to cover Paignton. It shows that Sign Art understands the area, the types of businesses operating here and the conditions in which local signs are expected to work.

What type of sign do you need?

Most customers do not arrive knowing the exact material, size or production method they need. They usually have a frontage, window or vehicle that needs to advertise the business more clearly.

You can explain what you are trying to achieve, your approximate budget and where the sign will be used. I can then advise you on a sensible option without making the job more complicated or expensive than necessary.

Sign Art produces:

  • Shop fascias and business signs
  • Window lettering and graphics
  • Van signwriting and vehicle lettering
  • Magnetic vehicle signs
  • Pavement signs and A-boards
  • PVC banners
  • Printed site and promotional signs

Business cards, printed workwear and other supporting business print are also available if you want your branding to remain consistent.

Sign making for Paignton businesses

A shop sign has to do more than fill the space above the door. It needs to be readable quickly, suit the building and give customers confidence that they have found the right business.

That is particularly important in busy Paignton locations such as Winner Street, Torquay Road and the town centre, where every frontage is competing for attention. Businesses near the harbour and seafront also need to consider how exposed the sign will be to wind, rain and salt air.

Before recommending a material, I will consider:

  • Where the sign will be positioned
  • How far away it needs to be read
  • The size and condition of the available space
  • How exposed the frontage is
  • Whether the sign is permanent or temporary
  • The amount of information it genuinely needs to display
  • Your available budget

Sign Art designs and produces shop and business signage but does not currently provide on-site sign installation. If measurements or photographs are needed, I will explain what information is required before the sign is produced.

Van signwriting in Paignton

A signwritten van advertises your business while you are travelling, parked outside a customer’s property or working around Paignton and Torbay.

The most effective van graphics are not necessarily the most complicated. For many tradespeople, a clear business name, service and telephone number on both sides and the rear will do the job. The lettering needs to be large enough to read, positioned around the vehicle’s panels and designed with enough contrast against the paintwork.

A small signwritten van can start from approximately £100, depending on the amount of lettering, design work and vehicle layout.

More involved designs can include larger graphics, additional services and coordinated branding across several vehicles. I will tell you honestly what is likely to improve the vehicle and what is simply adding cost without making the message clearer.

Vehicle graphics are applied at the Sign Art workshop in Newton Abbot. The time required depends on the vehicle, the amount of lettering and the complexity of the design. You will be given a realistic timescale once the vehicle and proposed layout have been assessed.

Will vehicle lettering damage the paintwork?

Vehicle vinyl should not normally damage sound, original paintwork when correctly applied and carefully removed.

However, the condition of the paint beneath the graphics cannot be guaranteed. Particular care is needed where a vehicle has been resprayed, repaired or has damaged paint or failing lacquer. These issues should be discussed before graphics are applied.

Magnetic signs for cars, vans and taxis

Magnetic signs are useful when you need vehicle advertising without permanently applying lettering to the paintwork.

They are often chosen for:

  • Personal vehicles also used for business
  • Temporary vehicle branding
  • Taxi and private-hire vehicles
  • Replacement or short-term vehicles
  • Businesses that need to remove their advertising occasionally

Magnetic vehicle signs start from approximately £55 per pair. A popular size is around 200mm by 600mm, which usually provides enough room for a business name, telephone number and short description of the service.

The final size depends on the available flat area of the vehicle. Magnetic signs must sit against suitable steel bodywork and should not cross deep curves, trims or panel gaps.

Remove them regularly and clean both the magnet and the vehicle panel. Water and grit trapped underneath can mark the paintwork if the signs are left in place without cleaning.

Any taxi or private-hire signage remains subject to the requirements of the relevant licensing authority. Check the applicable rules before ordering.

Window graphics and lettering

Window graphics can help a Paignton shop, office or salon explain what it offers before the customer reaches the door.

Options include:

  • Opening hours and contact details
  • Cut vinyl business lettering
  • Printed promotional graphics
  • Frosted-effect privacy film
  • Temporary offers and seasonal displays

The design should remain readable without covering the window with unnecessary information. A customer passing the premises only has a few seconds to understand what the business does.

Sign Art designs and produces window graphics but does not currently offer on-site installation.

Who will design and produce your signs?

I started signwriting in 1979, when the trade still involved traditional hand-painted lettering. Since then, I have worked through the development of cut vinyl, digital print and modern sign-production methods.

That experience helps when deciding what a sign actually needs, how a vehicle layout should follow the body panels and when a simpler design will work better than an overcomplicated one.

You will deal directly with me throughout the job rather than passing between a salesperson, designer and separate production department.

How does the process work?

Get in touch and explain what you need. Photographs, approximate measurements and details of the vehicle or premises are useful at the beginning.

I will then:

  1. Discuss the purpose of the sign or vehicle graphics.
  2. Identify any measurements or additional information needed.
  3. Recommend a suitable approach.
  4. Provide a quotation for the agreed work.
  5. Prepare a design proof for approval.
  6. Produce the signage or arrange a workshop appointment for vehicle graphics.

On-site installation of shop signs and window graphics is not currently offered.
